Impressing
The Mobile World Congress celebrated in Barcelona is impressing. Impressing because of those hundreds of millions of Euros that turns and brings to the city. But also because of the new products' presentations that the biggest world wide telecommunications and consumer product enterprises do on day one or even one day before. It is also incredible the money they -of course- spend in marketing, in huge stands and in showing every thing they have to offer. But to me, the most impressing was nothing of this. I tell you what it was: out of about 240.000 m2 trade fare space spread in seven huge halls, one of them was different.
I went walking long corridors with wooden made, one or two stores high stands-buildings, painted with corporate colors and big logotypes prepared for the four days occasion to run meetings from 9:00h to 16:00h. That part of the trade fair was quite. Very quite. Few visitors walking around. Silent. Almost like a library.
Now and then you could see an entrance resembling the reception of an hotel and could peek behind it some cubicles and closed meeting rooms. Others showed luxury for those selected visitors who like in a well rated restaurant enjoyed delicatessen on an elegant linen table cloth. I could see caviar. And Champagne. And it smelt like heaven.
Four days. Seven hours a day. About 30 hours of possible meetings in almost 2.000 m2.
It was clear to me that companies paying expenses to employees traveling to a city with never higher hotel prices was not to see stands well illuminated and with new carpets. Come on, of course not. But it is difficult to imagine what happens in there. The contacts that are made, the deals that are discussed, the business that is created, the partnerships that will result of them and who knows what else.
But one thing was clear: the goal of a coming year is to be in one of those meeting rooms seeing how the business is organised and preferably, planing some of it in my own brand new top of the wave last generation Mobile World Congress Smartphone and taking that part of the business back home with me.
